eBay Promoted Listings — Are They Worth It?

How it works

You pay a percentage (2-20%) of your sale price, and eBay shows your listing more prominently in search results. You only pay when you actually sell.

When it's worth it

• High margin: You can afford 5-10% extra fees
• New listings: To build initial sales history
• Seasonal products: Before Christmas, back-to-school, etc.
• High competition: To be visible in crowded categories

When it's NOT worth it

• Margin under 20% — the extra fee eats your profit
• Niche products without competition — you're already alone
• Too high ad rate — start low (2-3%) and increase slowly

Tip

Start at 2% and observe for 2 weeks. Only increase if sales don't improve. Never go above 8% with normal margins.
